Junior Research Manager
We are currently looking for a Junior Research Manager to join one of the groups specialist divisions. Human Digital specializes in researching a range of online harms, including the exploitation of new or emergent online technologies by malign actors. We are dedicated to helping our customers from the public, private and civic sectors to better understand online threats and help them develop proportionate and effective responses.
Our work is driven by a commitment to producing data-led insights and evidenced analysis, combining both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Our approach to research operates within robust legal and ethical frameworks that ensure our Customers receive consistently high standards of usable analysis.
Human Digital is part of M&C Saatchi World Services with offices in London, UK.
About the role:
As a Junior Research Manager, you will play a crucial role in supporting our efforts to understand how extreme right-wing terrorism manifests online. Your work will require pre-existing knowledge of this issue, alongside demonstrable knowledge of relevant UK government policies, laws and online regulation.
The role will require you to use data analytic skills to i) identify patterns and trends within large datasets of open-source data, ii) operate social listening and OSINT tools, iii) combine qualitative and quantitative approaches to extract data-led insights and iv) write regular reports for internal and external distribution.
The role will report directly to the Senior Research Manager and require regular communication with both the Business and Engineering teams.
The job is an opportunity to work in a small, hardworking team operating at the forefront of industry efforts to understand online threats. It is ideal for those in the earlier years of their career who are looking to grow their subject matter knowledge, test and develop their research skills, experience periods of high work intensity, take ownership of ongoing research tasks and create opportunities for inputting into research strategy and design.
The work we do is challenging but hugely rewarding, and everyone at Human Digital - from senior management to the data engineers - learns and develops together.
The role is mostly remote working with the expectation that you will be available to come into our London office one day per week if required.
Job Responsibilities:
- Report Writing: Weekly and Monthly reports for internal and external distribution, combining both qualitative with quantitative research skills. Respond to ad-hoc requests from the Business team and provide support for research proposals.
- Data Analysis: Deploy pre-existing quantitative research skills to navigate large datasets of open-source data and extract insights. Human Digital will provide training for upskilling quantitative analysis, but a demonstrable interest and pre-existing knowledge base is essential.
- OSINT Analysis: Conduct open-source research in alignment with Human Digital’s secure, legal and ethical frameworks, combining data streams from multiple sources to support report writing and data analysis.
- Collaboration: Work closely with senior researchers, data engineers and the business team to support ongoing work and contribute to developing new projects.
-
Continuous Learning: Stay updated on all related UK government policies, laws and online regulation, and academic studies. This can align with identifying opportunities for growing Human Digital’s public research footprint.
About You:
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate detailed understanding of extreme right-wing terrorism, clear familiarity with quantitative data analysis methods, knowledge of relevant UK government policies, laws and online regulation, and evidence their ability to write clearly and analytically. The interview process will include a practical test to ensure all candidates have an opportunity to demonstrate this.
- Work Experience: 12-months minimum in a similar role.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- Research Skills: Both qualitative and quantitative analytical skills with ability to interpret data, identify patterns and extract actionable insights.
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with datasets on Excel or equivalent, and a willingness to be trained to use basic SQL for enhanced data querying.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise reports.
- Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and accuracy in research and data analysis with an ability to quickly take on instructions and feedback.
- Knowledge: In-depth understanding of the subject matter.
- Adaptability: Ability to work independently in a remote setting while managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Teamwork: Collaborative mindset with a willingness to learn and contribute to team efforts. Ability to cope during periods of high intense work output.
