ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a Data Engineer to support the maintenance and ongoing development of Human Digital’s databases, data pipelines and customer facing data visualisation tools. The successful candidate will be able to quickly understand how our existing infrastructure works, contribute to fixing and improving code from the start, and work and report to the Lead Developer to design, test and deliver new functionality.

Human Digital delivers data and research that helps our customers understand and respond to the most harmful threats facing us as a society and as a nation, including from terrorism, violent extremism and foreign state interference. We are a small team of analysts and engineers who are proud of the positive impact our work has.

Job Responsibilities:

• Support the Lead Developer on maintenance and development of new and existing data ingestion pipelines.
• Write complex SQL queries for data extraction and analysis.
• Support the Front-End Engineer to improve, de-bug and test existing dashboard code.
• Python proficiency.
• SQL database management.
• Close collaboration with the research and business teams.
• Contribute to continuously improving performance, security, and scalability of data processes.

ABOUT YOU

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of data ingestion pipelines and storage practices, and be familiar with displaying this in front-end visualisations. They will be willing to work on a range of tasks in both the back and front-end.

• 2+ years’ experience in data engineering
• Relevant data engineering university degree or qualification
• Motivated by delivering a high standard of work
• Ability to explain their work to non-technical people
• Open to learning new technologies
• Confidence to ask the research/business teams for the information they need to carry out their tasks (non-technical)
• Strong problem-solving skills and an attention to detail
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced agile environment

• Knowledge of AWS (or similar cloud-based technology)
• Experience of front-end development, in particular React and Plotly Dashboards
• Experience working with social media data or APIs
• Experience with Git deployment processes
• Experience working with sensitive data
• Experience working within national security, defence or cyber security
